St. Catherine's Lighthouse
Built in 1838 by Trinity House following the loss of The Clarendon on rocks nearby, it was fully automated in 1997 with the three keepers leaving shortly after. There used to be tours of the lighthouse but this is sadly no more. No parking.
Showing the steep lane which you walk down to The Lighthouse. The Lighthouse keepers cottages are adjacent, these were bombed during the war and all three were killed. There is a mark in the light lens where some shrapnel hit it. It is possible to walk either side of The Lighthouse. There is The Buddle Inn pub half a mile away with car parking, quite a few people park there and visit the pub as well. Either take the footpath down the steps opposite the pub car park {sometimes muddy} or take the small lane down a bit past the pub. Picture taken many years ago when there used to be tours. About a mile away is the village of Niton from here. It used to be possible to sit outside The Buddle Inn on a warm summer evening and watch The Lighthouse flashing but I think tall trees are blocking this sight now.
