Life in the 50's

By Marion Laurence

Not sure if I have contacted you before, but the IOW was the place we went to for our first holiday in the 50’s! We used to go to Freshwater, stayed in a B and B in The Avenue – even remember the name of the house “Lucerne” run by a Mr and Mrs Cook, which was our surname too. Used to visit Colwell Bay almost daily - can see Dad now getting a tray of tea, which was quite a walk away. Remember changing into bathing gear in the beach hut we rented – can feel the sandy floor now! I had a knitted costume that my Mum made me – which used to stretch once in the water………………………Also wore a very uncomfortable, thick, rubber bathing hat – hated it – even now I can’t swim! I used to be given Kwells to stop sea sickness on the ferry over from the mainland – but often they didn’t work.

Happy, happy memories – visited the Island several times when grown up, but never the magic of the 1950’s. It was all magic then!!
