Life in the 40's

By Patrick Pyke

In 1949 I was courting a young 19 year old who's parents were not very pleased about our relationship and took her away for a holiday in "The Cottage", Niton and forbade me to follow. Of course I did as our relationship was serious and we had a confrontation outside the Buddle Inn which raised a few eyebrows as it got a little heated. It caused a family rift and so we broke up. I often think of that time and now I'm happily married for 57 years and in my 80's, often wonder of her whereabouts and have visited the island a few times since. We have now been in Australia for 42 years, but often reminisce about the I.O.W.
